"Tornada a l'origen: La vinculació del teixit a l'art digital"

For the project 'Tornada a l'origen: la vinculació del teixit a l'art digital', we decided to delve into what might have preceded Marie-France’s work—that is to say, almost the very beginnings of her career. Through various meetings at her studio, we developed what would eventually become the exhibition project.

Marie-France had spent some time redirecting her focus towards what would ultimately become this new project for the Sala Fortuny: a return to, and an almost paired fit between, the ‘digital thing’ and the textile—in other words, her previous works created using tapestry techniques.

It was, and is, a return to the origin, speculative and experimental, driven and energised by her digital works. This was the starting point for developing the entire series that you can now see installed and on display.”

"This artistic proposal is the result of a single project called ‘Urbertrònica’, and my intention is to create a dialogue between the loom and the code, the tangible and the virtual. It is the result of a transmutation."

“Urbertrònica I, the suspended work, levitating in the middle of the room, will become—is becoming—a Leviathan that pierces through everything, through all the works, reflecting and replicating itself, appealing to a synthetic, digitised memory that modifies everything: the individual and contemporary societies.”

Memories of the future

Marie-France Veyrat’s work has been characterised, since its earliest manifestations, by a structural timelessness and a vocation for universality that overflows any territorial, historical or cultural affiliation. Her figures are not inscribed in a recognisable geography or a stable chronology: they emerge as transversal, almost extra-dimensional entities that seem to articulate a common language between possible worlds.

Within them, a radical intuition is manifested: that of an art that is not produced in time, but precedes it; an art that antecedents its own formalisation and is activated through one of the oldest and, paradoxically, most advanced technologies of this dimension: the intertwining of cloth and fabric.

The purpose of the piece

The final objective of the exhibition is for the public to stop and connect with the pieces on an emotional level. In a fast-paced world, Veyrat reclaims time for contemplation: “Everyone goes very fast; often people enter an exhibition and leave after five minutes. This way, it is impossible to understand anything. I would like the public to stop in front of the works and try to create a connection. Artworks communicate with the viewer, but the latter often does not give them the necessary time to explain themselves.”

"In this exhibition, I show the evolution of my career, moving from textile art and recycled physical pieces to the reconstruction of a three-dimensional digital space."
