Marie-France Veyrat
VEYRAT, A PIONEER OF LARGE-FORMAT ART IN CATALONIA
Taking advantage of the Gaudí Year being celebrated around this time, Marie-France recalls the “Campanar: T’estimo” project, which was not simply a projection, but a declaration of her love for architecture and history as part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Antoni Gaudí’s birth. What Veyrat did in 2002 was to anticipate her time. While most digital artists were working in small formats or on conventional screens, she understood that architecture could serve as an artistic medium.
“Campanar: T’estimo” laid the foundations for what we know today as architectural mapping. The precision required to fit the images onto the complex edges of the Reus bell tower demanded a spatial and technical vision that few artists possessed at the time. She was not seeking merely a visual spectacle, but an emotional fusion between the viewer, the monument and the legacy of the Modernist genius.
Veyrat chose a setting charged with symbolism: the bell tower of the Prioral of Sant Pere in Reus. Although the projections took place in 2002, the reality is that the project was initiated in 2000, when technology was not as fast or advanced as it is today.
THE LEGACY OF A VISION
Marie-France Veyrat demonstrated that light could be as malleable as thread. Her intervention in Reus marked a before and after in the way cultural events in public spaces were understood, demonstrating that contemporary art and historical heritage can not only coexist, but also enhance one another.
Two decades after that event, “Campanar: T’estimo” is still remembered as the moment when the sky over Reus was illuminated to remind us that, with creativity and audacity, even the tallest towers can tell stories.
“I am proud to be a role model and to have paved the way for future creators.”
